My Havanese dogs are nearing 9 years old and have struggled with itching skin and rear ends since birth. One of them especially, is worse than the other, constantly chewing at his rear and scratching it along carpets and flooring.

I have tried changing the protein in their diet and have used pills and powders to be ingested ,that various vets have prescribed, but to no avail.

Your suggestions will be appreciated.

Itching, Scratching Havanese Dogs
by: Sandra

Hello Sherry,

My best suggestion is that the ' pills and powders ' your vets have prescribed, have in fact created a bigger and on going problem.

Drugs have the ability to create an imbalance in the gut microbiome, as a side effect.

So, the only way to fix that, is to stop all drugs and let your little dogs heal on their own. This will take lots of time though, because you say this problem has been going on for 9 years. Don't expect a 9 year old problem to disappear in in 2 weeks. Won't happen! Likely, your little dogs are yeasty. Thus the itchy bums and scratching.

You might consider getting a good canine probiotic and see if that helps to speed things up.
