For each human year, add 4 years for small dogs, 5 years for medium sized dogs, 6 years for big dogs and for giant breeds such as the Newfoundland Dog, Great Dane, Irish wolfhound or Bernese Mountain Dog, add 7 years. A mixed breed dog will generally live a year or so longer than a purebred dog , because of the wider gene pool which offers some protection against genetic weaknesses. If you want to increase your dog's chances of living a long life, most vets now agree that preventing obesity is the most important health influencing factor. If your dog is over weight, that will put stress on your dog's joints and heart, and increases the likelihood of developing other chronic dog health problems and diseases such as cancer.
