Therapeutic Touch

Companion Animal Touch Therapy

Foster Pet Wellness at Home

Touch therapies such as Therapeutic Touch can relax, re-balance and energize your pet. Having lived with animals my whole life long, I have come to understand the connectedness of all life, to all life. Since we are all Source Energy mostly, the healing energy of one, is passed to the other.

Just being able to touch and stroke the wonderful pets of my lifetime, has brought a healing calmness to me in times of trouble and in times of happiness.

The feel of the soft fur and the warm body, the gentle sounds of purring, the barks and woofs, and wet warm kisses has given me more than I can ever tell you.

I understand also, and know, that MY touch, has promoted healing in a sick pet, calmed a dying pet, eased pain in a hurt pet, and given joy to those many pets who loved me unconditionally.

It has been an unconditional two way street. We have both been the beneficiary of healing love at one time or another.

It has been my experience that companion animal Touch Therapy such as Reiki for dogs, or dog massage, or the wonderful Tellington Touch to name just a few, can and do, promote health and healing in our beloved pets.

It is no accident that pets love to be touched, and we love to touch them. It has been scientifically proven that babies who receive no touching, do not thrive. The same goes for our pets.

I would like to share with you, excerpts from an article written by my friend Bonita Summers a recognized Therapeutic Touch Practitioner registered with the Therapeutic Touch Network of Ontario. Bonita lives in Bath, Ontario.

Here is Bonita doing healing touch therapy on her dog Taz.

“She’s never done that before,” remarked my client.

Gina watched as her pet collie walked over to me and lay down at my feet. I had come to Gina’s home to give her a session in Therapeutic Touch™.

Normally reticent with strangers, her dog appeared to be asking for my personal attention.

In my practice as an Intuitive Consultant and Natural Healing Practitioner, it is not uncommon for clients’ animals to act out of the ordinary, draping themselves over their owners’ bodies or reclining at my feet while I’m giving a treatment.

Animals are keenly aware when healing energy is present, whether it appears in the form of a modality such as Therapeutic TouchTM or when someone nearby enters a serene state through meditation or relaxation techniques.

As a TT practitioner, I often work with pets and rescued animals. This modality offers quick pain relief for dogs and animals, and is calming to an animal experiencing trauma or anxiety.

Dedicated pet owners can learn to scan their animals on a regular basis, so that changes to the field become apparent.

Regular scanning can provide invaluable information, as it did for my husband and I when we realized that one of the lumps our dog, King, had on his leg, wasn’t the usual fatty deposit of an elderly dog, but likely cancer.

The field around the new lump felt completely different from the fatty deposits he’d had for years. Soon after, he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, which given his advanced age, was best treated with euthanasia. During the interval between diagnosis and his passing, he received TT on a daily basis for pain relief.

Therapeutic TouchTM is useful during veterinary visits to keep animal companions relaxed. On one occasion, my vet was amazed at my cat Caramel’s, complete lack of reaction to being given several injections of saline to clear up flu-induced dehydration.

Her companion, James, had to be woken up and turned over to receive all three of his most recent vaccinations as he’d fallen asleep while being given Therapeutic TouchTM.

Marlene Bradshaw, a Therapeutic Touch practitioner who specializes in work with companion animals and horses, concurs.

Asked why people bring animals to her, she replies, “Mainly high anxiety... because Therapeutic Touch, I find, helps calm the animal. Most of the animals that come to me are more to do with health reasons, to balance out their energy.”

Easy to learn, first-level classes are inexpensive and may be offered as a one or two-day workshop. As a dog first-aid treatment, TT gives pet owners the ability to respond to an injury effectively, reducing trauma and the risk of further injury while in transit to veterinary care.

TT is a simple way to enhance your animal companions’ well-being and monitor them for changes in health between veterinary check-ups.
