Hi Nancy,

Look at your dog's behavior from his perspective:

When he is rushing to the door before you, barking like crazy ... in his mind he is protecting you and letting you know that strangers are about to get into the house.

I am going to assume that you probably shout at him to make him stop barking, and he thinks he is right... there is something to worry about because you are " barking" as well.

Here's what you need to do.

First, take charge.

When the bell rings and your dog rushes to the door, stay calm. I will say that again, stay calm.

Do not open the door.

Call the dog away from the door, and put him in a sit or lay down position.
You can say something like this... All is good. I'll handle this. Give him a treat... but, he has to stay in the sit position and be quiet.

Then, open the door and welcome your guests. No one pays attention to the dog unless he remains in a sit position.

This is something you are going to have to practice.

Maybe get a friend to help you, and repeat the process a few times.

The most important thing here is... you are in charge. You must stay calm and speak in a very quiet reassuring voice.

When we have issues with behaviors and look at them from our dog's perspective, it helps to understand the dog better, and solve the situation easier.
