When the Flea Bites. Yikes!

What could be worse than fleas, flea bites and a flea infestation?

The last thing our pets need are fleas and flea bites. Also, they do not need the health problems that come with pests such as dog fleas and cat fleas, and believe me you don't want a flea infestation your home.

Then everyone will be scratching...not just the dog!

The local pet stores have racks of chemical flea products. The vet’s office is just waiting for your yearly stock up of Revolution Flea Control, Advantage flea medicine, or Frontline flea and tick treatment.

Pesticide services are standing by, just in case the problem gets so bad that your home needs to be fumigated...with the flea bomb. Humans can get flea bites, too. So watch out!

Itchy dog cartoon An entire industry is dedicated to solving the flea problem and promises to get rid of fleas for you.

I am not here to talk about how bad this industry is. They have a job to do. But you should know that it is poisoning our pets.

Flea control uses insecticides. Insecticides are # 2 on the list of Top 10 Dog Poisons.

...but,

I want to provide you with some food for thought. I want you to know that, there are better more natural, alternative solutions for natural flea control. These methods can help you get rid of fleas once and for all. My dogs never have fleas.

The itch from flea bites can be stopped with natural solutions also. My favorite remedy for itchy bites is tea tree oil. Do not use tea tree oil on cats however.

Fleas, like most parasites, will seek out the weak. Fleas are parasites. They will invade an animal that is undernourished, sick or stressed. Fleas and ticks always seem to prefer an unhealthy animal.

canine flea Small and sick animals are particularly at risk. If a small animal or a sick animal is infested with fleas, the flea bites can cause flea bite anemia.

Fleas are particularly tough and resilient, and plentiful. If a male and female flea are placed in a new home, and given adequate food, such as your dog or cat, they will propagate and produce a population of millions in less than a month.

How scary is that?

The first thing to understand is that healthy, well fed, contented pets, do not get fleas. This is because they have an active healthy Immune System that is able to repel invaders.

Statistics indicate, that for all the advances made in chemical flea treatments, our pets are more plagued by this problem today than ever before.

Partly for those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere, that’s a result of changing weather patterns. Fleas now have more hatching cycles... flea life cycles... before the frost of coming winter.

However mostly it’s because when we douse our pets with chemicals to repel their fleas, we weaken their Immune Systems making them even more vulnerable next season.

Given how awesomely adaptable fleas as parasites are to toxins, ( not unlike bacteria and virus mutations, due to the overuse of antibiotics ), we know that sooner or later they will develop a tolerance to and perhaps even thrive on, the chemicals we give them.

Holistic Protocol for Flea Infestation Prevention

I want to offer you some natural alternative choices. The ultimate goal to keep in mind, is always, to work toward getting your pet healthy enough, that fleas will not be attracted to them at all.

All health is based in nutrition.

Diet

  • that means natural dog food - grain free meat based food. Dogs are carnivores ( look for whole meat as the first ingredient).
  • raw meaty bones to maintain good oral health. This prevents bad teeth caused by commercial pet food. Periodontal disease is the main cause of Immune System stress.

Supplements

  • High Potency Garlic is a natural anti-parasitic. It will help your pet expel fleas and parasites such as ticks, which can cause Lyme Disease and mosquitos from which your pet can contract heartworm.

Fleas hate the taste and smell, making it a natural flea repellant. Garlic provides many other health benefits, for the Cardiovascular and Circulatory Systems as well as the Immune System. This herb is as effective as many drugs in lowering high blood pressure.

Garlic has been called nature's penicillin and destroys many types of parasites and bacterial pathogens.

  • Black Walnut is one of my favorites for dogs. It is among other things, an anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, antiviral, insecticide, and Immune Amphoteric ( Amphoteric: normalizes function in a tissue or organ).

I give our dogs High Potency Garlic and Black Walnut Capsules throughout the flea bite season from April to November. You can get yours here from Natures Sunshine.

Use An All Natural Dog Shampoo for Fleas

The skin accounts for 12 percent of total body weight, and is the barrier with the outside world.

Immune cells located in the skin, guard your dog against invaders such as parasites ( fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and other insects ), bacterias, chemical and environmental toxins .

It is critically important for your dog’s good health and the health of his liver, that what you put on your dog’s skin, is natural and pure. An all natural dog shampoo free of chemicals and perfumes, is very important part of a healthy regime for keeping your dog free from fleas and flea bites.

Helpful Household Hints

If necessary:

  • Launder all bedding and mats in hot water with Tea Tree Oil using 1/4 tsp.
  • Vacuum all areas of the house, especially where your pet lies. Pay special attention to cracks and crevices. Put a commercial flea collar in the vacuum bag. (Do not put this on your pet )
  • Spray all areas of the house, especially where your pet lies. Use a combination of Tea Tree Oil, Sandalwood Oil and Lavender Oil. Add ¼ tsp each in a spray bottle of water.

Important Note

Holistic natural flea control for your pet is in the long run, less expensive and better for your pet’s general good health.

Flea bite season does not have to scare you!
